New to Church?

Here at St Barnabas we understand that stepping into a new church, especially if you haven't attended in a while or if it is your very first time, can feel overwhelming. But rest assured, our church is like a family, and we are always eager to welcome new members with open arms.

Useful things to know beforehand

There is no set dress code when attending a service at St Barnabas Church. Some people like to dress formally, whereas others prefer a more casual attire.

Toilets are located in the Community Hub area and include separate facilities for the disabled.

What to Expect at Sunday Service

On a Sunday, entrance is via the large, processional doors. From the moment you walk through our doors, you will be greeted with warmth and kindness. Every Sunday we have welcomers on the door who are there to do just that - make you feel welcome! There is no set seating plan so feel free to find a spot with a good view of the altar, and if you have young children, you might find it easier to sit near the crèche at the rear of the church.

The service begins at 10:30am in church (you will be reminded by the bells ringing!) and it lasts for about an hour. The service includes prayers, hymns, readings, and a sermon or talk. Typically, we stand for hymns and sit for prayers and readings. If you are unsure, it may be helpful to watch what others do. Rather than handing out individual service sheets, we have a large projector that displays the liturgy of the service. Parts meant for congregational response are highlighted in bold. We understand that it can feel daunting joining in at first, but we encourage you to try. Don’t worry, nobody will mind if you don’t feel comfortable singing or speaking out loud straight away.

No Need to Worry

We know it might seem like everyone knows each other, but remember that every member was once new too! Our services are designed to be inclusive and welcoming to everyone, whether it is your first visit or you are returning after some time away.

During the 'Peace,' the minister will invite everyone to offer a sign of peace. We shake hands and say, "Peace be with you!” It is a friendly and joyful moment that we encourage all to participate in.

Communion

Everyone is invited to the altar for communion. If you usually take communion in other churches or have taken it before, then please do join the line to take the bread and wine with us. Each row is guided to join the line, one at a time. If you have never taken communion, you can receive a blessing instead by keeping your hands down - the minister will understand that you are requesting a blessing. Once received, please return to your seat. It’s perfectly okay to remain in your seat and observe during your first few visits to church. Many people do this and find their own way to join in once they feel ready.

Bringing Children

Children of all ages are welcome. On the first Sunday of each month, we hold an all-age Holy Communion where we encourage and celebrate participation from our younger members. Parents and carers with babies and toddlers are welcome to use our crèche (with nappy changing facilities) at the back of the church. Once a month, there are also activities available for children in the Community Hub during the service.

After the Service

At the end of the service, there is an opportunity to make a donation. Contributions are always appreciated, and they help support the mission and ministry of the church. There is no pressure to give, and we are grateful for any support you can provide.

All are invited to stay after the service to enjoy tea, coffee, squash and biscuits in the Community Hub. It is a great way to connect with others. While there is no charge for this, we do accept donations if you would like to contribute to the cost of refreshments.

If you are new to St Barnabas Church or thinking about becoming a regular visitor, please do let us know! Feel free to mention it to one of our churchwardens or clergy. But if you’d prefer to keep coming without making any commitments, that’s completely fine too - we would love to see you as often as you can make it, but just come when you are able.

What to expect at Midweek Service

Midweek morning prayer is every Wednesday at 10.30am in the Chapel. Entrance is via the glass Community Hub doors. This is a quiet and reflective service where we pray together in the peaceful surrounds of our chapel. Whilst there are no official welcomers, it is generally a much smaller congregation and as soon as you arrive, one of the team will be happy to guide you.

Join Us

People come to church for all sorts of reasons. Whether you are looking for a quiet space for reflection, hoping to get involved in our services, seeking prayer or spiritual support, or simply exploring us as a potential venue for a wedding or baptism, you are always welcome here.

If you are still feeling a bit uncertain about what to expect, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’d be happy to arrange a time for you to visit, have a chat, or show you around before you attend a service.
